Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep or DADES as the book acronyms it is a graphic novel that collects a series of BOOM publication comics that syndicated the first graphic novel adaptations of the Philip K Dick novel The excellent artwork and the fine summary of PKD s novel make up for my own general ambivalence about DADES itself At the risk of sounding dismissive of DADES it s a miracle Ridley Scott managed to make Blade Runner given the source materialThe graphic novel re publishing a series of comics from I believe 2011 sticks close to the original source material meaning that Deckard looks nothing like Harrison Ford and the Nietzchian Replicants are really nothing than a side show in a story about electric animals and empathy sharing cults It s far less the cyberpunk work Blade Runner is and far a philosophical musing that happens to have a few sci fi elements thrown in The most powerful moments of Blade Runner Deckard uestioning his own humanity the meeting with God the tears in the rain solilouy you ll need the Director s Cut to get thosePossibly because I m an uncouth philistine and possibly because I don t share PKD s crusade for existential truth DADES didn t strike me all that much when I first read it years ago I didn t relate to the protagonist s grappling with Mercerism nor his need for authenticity and truth I picked up this graphic novel from the local library in order to refresh my memory in time for Blade Runner 2049 and not sure too much has changedTo its credit the artwork is stunning and they did an excellent job of making the story flow well Probably better than the original novel given how Deckard s experiences are better communicated to the reader A job well done all aroundI e been reading about PKD himself though and it keeps making me feel uneasy about the themes in some of his other works I ve read He seemed detached from the world and I wonder how many of his themes were the product of existential exploration and how much were mental illness Things like his Exegesis do not exactly inspire confidencePerhaps I m just not alienated enough yet

Okay given how faithfully this series follows the source material I will not get into specifics about the plot or themes or everything else we already know and love about the original novel but rather regard the art style Also since I can t just review issue by issue as they are part of a whole I ll just copypaste the following for each one The art is to put it simply gorgeous and in perfect harmony with the aesthetic Philip K Dick attempted to imprint into his work through an admittedly rather stoic prose which left a lot of things open to interpretation as envisioned by Ridley Scott s Blade Runner my favorite movie of all time The balance between color and shade as well as the vivid representation of scenes we could only but interpret in the novel makes this dystopic future come alive in the best possible way while differentiating itself from the aforementioned movie adaptation This is indeed a whole new way to experience and all too familiar story revisit its themes and thought provoking imagery and appreciate it all over again Thoroughly enjoyed this comic book adaptation I really did

Having not even read the novel or watched Blade Runner before stumbling upon this series at my library I went and checked a volume out finding that I d glossed over the part where it was volume 3 In my defense the number was somewhat obscured by the library s bar code sticker on its lower spineAfter picking up the first two volumes to complement it I sluggishly took it in At first it was jarring reading descriptors galore while the art panels could have should have handled the action in the first place But the art wasn t necessarily complete but rather a complementary manner of setting the mood of broader scenes In truth I think they sacrificed the uantity of panels needed to illustrate the activity for the uality of presentation Rather vain but in a good way I thinkUpon finishing volume 3 I immediately tracked down the last 3 volumes They read like a breeze flowing wonderfully from the momentum that the first 3 volumes built Oh sure at times the pacing or focus of the characters and narrative itself was odd It was far from nonsensical though I recall seeing a review here on Goodreads for the novel where someone complained about the disparity of attention Philip K Dick gave to the subjects of falling in love and purchasing a goat It was the most natural formation though if one took themselves out of their own expectations and realized that love is a far fleeting emotion compared to the nurturing of a living animal on a perpetually dying worldMoreover it needs to be said the ending itself is anti climactic And I loved it to pieces Such an anti climax was the very thing that bridged me into its own little world Because certainly I can come to understand many of the concepts put forth But nothing hit closer to home than the daily feeling of Today got pretty intense at work but the climax is long gone and I just want to go to bed with whatever dignity I can take with me Cause isn t that the kicker Life isn t an epic tale of heroism it s just a string of triumphs often underwhelming than we d like But dammit all we ll take emA truly wonderful read or so I say
