Pied Piper

Pied Piper Free read ✓ 2 Ldren of some friends The roads become impassable and Howard also comes across five children who need his help He ends up leadin A wonderful book Absolutely outstandingMy copy came from the library at the Mass Maritime Academy in Bourne MA where I also have a summer home I tried to get it via my home library this was the closest copy they could find It is part of the Complete Works of Nevil Shute which I had no idea existed Anyhow I am a huge fan of Shute s novel On the Beach and that prompted me to look for some of his other novels To the book What a story Supposedly based on a true story it was told to Shute during a bombing raid in London He s in his club drinking smoking etc when a raid begins the year 1942 Instead of taking refuge in the basement with the other members Shute remains upstairs enjoying his coffee and brandy Well he remains alert to what s going on and IS ready to take refuge if need be At any rate he runs into a man named Howard also staying upstairs in the club and to pass the time Howard tells Shute the story of how he crossed France with several small children just as the Germans were invading Hence the Pied Piper of the novel s title Except 70 year old Howard is a very loving caring concerned and provident piper unlike the one of legend view spoilerFinishing up a vacation in France Howard agrees to escort two English children home because it s not safe in Geneva which is where they live Seriously the talk was that Switzerland was soon to be invaded by Germany not France Hindsight always is twenty twenty So off Howard goes with his two young charges They go by train enjoying all the comforts Howard assumes are his comfortable accommodations excellent French food reliable transportation and anything his ample funds can afford The first two children are only a minor inconvenience at first But along the way he picks up several all under different circumstances The children are English and French Dutch and Polish But why was Mr Howard in France in the first place To go fishing of course the belief being that the trouble in the north would never reach the south that the French wouldn t surrender of course not and that Paris would never be taken and even if so there d be plenty of time to get out of the country To say Mr Howard is stupid or oblivious is far from the mark He s a man in mourning having recently lost his son an RAF pilot he knows the dangers But apparently at this time there were many who believed this skirmish with Hitler this small war would be cleaned up uickly by the French the English and so on America hadn t yet entered the war Of course anyone who thinks this way was absolutely wrong and things deteriorate rapidly The loss of convenient transportation or the certainty of a place to sleep and food to eat are first to go Howard picks up another child at the reuest of one of his hosts then another who has lost his parents in a bombing raid and then another another anotherAt the very end just as it seems the French Resistance or similar counterparts will help Howard and all the children escape from France the Germans are introduced like a black cloud complete with lightning and thunderclaps If this were purely fiction a reader might feel there are two major coincidences in the storyline that don t ring true But this was based on what Shute learned from the real man And considering the circumstances they aren t unbelievable hide spoiler

Pied Piper Free read ✓ 2 During John Howard's holiday in France the Nazis invade and he is forced to try to escape back to England with the two small chi I have felt like a kid in a candy store lately my books have been that good Here s another one that is virtually unread these days but such a charming story and so well written One of my favorite writers is Nevil Shute He has a style that is easy to read and so absorbing and absorbed is exactly what I was from the moment I opened the book and found two Londoners sipping Marsala in their club during a bombing raid Of the two one is an older man who has a tale to tell and he proceeds to do so with such charm that even the details of his fishing expedition singIn the weeks before France fell to the Germans Mr Howard decides to take a trip to the Jura to fish and try to forget a blow he has received While there he meets a couple with two children and when the invasion begins and he realizes he must get back to England pronto the couple ask him to take their children along He reluctantly agrees and sets out with babes in tow on what should be a uick escape Of course the invasion is worse than expected and the time is past for easy escapes so Howard and the children are in for an adventure they would rather not have Along the course of this adventure Howard picks up other children increasing the risks and slowing the progressI felt as if I were there I loved the calm and sweet Mr Howard I thought how unlike today s children these tykes were but also how alike all children are I felt the weight of the responsibility and the level of patience needed from a man who has already been told he is too old to be of any help in this war Howard puts his own life at risk to save this group of children he doesn t know and I thought of all the real lives that were saved by such men and women and of all the lives sacrificed in such attempts I adored the storyI have a dozen Nevil Shute books yet to read A Town Like Alice is on my all time favorites list and I am looking forward to reading the others one marvelous adventure at a time

Pied Piper Free read ✓ 2 G this motley group of youngsters through the French countryside constantly beset by danger yet heroically protecting his charge I haven t read anything by Nevil Shute before so I was interested to try this However having finished it I feel as though this is the literary euivalent of a black and white Sunday afternoon film We begin in a club where the frail elderly John Sidney Howard who is seventy doesn t seem that far off sits calmly through an air raid at his club Shunning the shelter he drinks by the fire where he is joined by another man and proceeds to tell him the story of his recent trip to EuropeAfter Mr Howard s son was killed he seemed to feel the need to travel to France in wartime Well this is hindsight but I would have thought that in any war it would be best to stay where you were However while in France the situation suddenly worsens and he decides to return home Then a couple living in Switzerland decide rather blithely to ask him to take their children back to England as they want to stay together not knowing how long the war would last There are it has to be said some pretty poor decisions made in this bookOur elderly gent now encumbered with both his fishing gear and the rather irritating Ronald and Shirley head off in the train Of course all goes wrong and along the way he ends up collecting a host of other children A young French girl whose father is in London a French boy whose parents are killed a young Dutch boy a Jewish boy whose father has been taken away and a half Jewish German girl He also discovers things about his son that he did not know and also finds his own strengthUltimately I didn t find this the heart warming read I expected It just seemed too obvious and the characters too stereotypical The chirpy British soldiers who happily allowed a group of assorted children and an old man onto their lorry the love story that Mr Howard unearths and the way he discovers a meaning to life while he has a job to do However the ending left me feeling somewhat deflated and ultimately the journey just went on too long
