Great Women of the American Revolution Free download î 107 Men may have fought the battles of the American Revolution but women played an important part too Some women fought the battle at home spea In all of the history classes I have ever been in we never talk about the Women of the American Revolution This book takes a reader on a journey through time looking at all the important contributions women make during the American Revolution We learn about how they are cooks seamstresses play writers poets and spies too The poetry and plays these women write are intentional and have a clear social agenda regarding the American Revolution We also learn what a camp follower is and find out who falls under that classification This book did a great job of exposing young readers to women during the American Revolution It is different than a textbook It also does a good job of bringing up women of all social classes We get to hear from the slave and poet Phyllis Wheatley and also women that are well known like Abigail Adams The book includes a thoughtful timeline of Women s contributions and outlines the time they were spies and aids this timeline really shows that women contributed to the peace treaty at the end of the war The only criticism I have is that the book is very generic but it is written for 5th graders I wish it would have talked about all of the other amazing things women were doing during that time I wish it discussed women becoming abolitionists or fighting for the right to vote The book also does talk about women returning to their place in kitchens and in homes after the war and I do not think that was necessary All in all fifth graders especially girls would connect to this book I would use it as an aid in a history class
