Great Women of the American Revolution Free download î 107 King their minds about the British occupation or gathering supplies for their soldiers Others fought openly for their cause secretly joinin This brief text uses six chapters to describe some of the contributions of females during the nation s fight for independence Thumbnail sketches are provided about women such as Mercy Warren and Phyllis Wheatley who used their pens to make a contribution The author also discusses the role of camp followers who followed their husbands as they went into battle as well as telling the stories of Margaret Corbin Prudence Wright and Deborah Sampson who joined the Continental army disguised as a man The author also explores the role of women who spied for the Patriots and for the Loyalists One of the best vignettes concerns Patriot Nancy Morgan Hart who held British soldiers at bay with a gun On the home front women even spun yarn for the war effort Although the stories are brief they are certainly likely to capture the attention of many curious readers who wonder about the role of women during that time period It turns out that we made plenty of contributions that have been ignored by history books

Great Women of the American Revolution Free download î 107 Men may have fought the battles of the American Revolution but women played an important part too Some women fought the battle at home spea In all of the history classes I have ever been in we never talk about the Women of the American Revolution This book takes a reader on a journey through time looking at all the important contributions women make during the American Revolution We learn about how they are cooks seamstresses play writers poets and spies too The poetry and plays these women write are intentional and have a clear social agenda regarding the American Revolution We also learn what a camp follower is and find out who falls under that classification This book did a great job of exposing young readers to women during the American Revolution It is different than a textbook It also does a good job of bringing up women of all social classes We get to hear from the slave and poet Phyllis Wheatley and also women that are well known like Abigail Adams The book includes a thoughtful timeline of Women s contributions and outlines the time they were spies and aids this timeline really shows that women contributed to the peace treaty at the end of the war The only criticism I have is that the book is very generic but it is written for 5th graders I wish it would have talked about all of the other amazing things women were doing during that time I wish it discussed women becoming abolitionists or fighting for the right to vote The book also does talk about women returning to their place in kitchens and in homes after the war and I do not think that was necessary All in all fifth graders especially girls would connect to this book I would use it as an aid in a history class
