review La Symphonie pastorale La Symphonie pastorale review ☆ 3 Zın ailede bıraktığı derin izler etrafında gelişen trajik bir hikâye konu edilir Yazarın ismiyle Beethoven’ın ünlü eseri Pastoral Senfoni’ye gö. It won t be easy to review this book without giving away too much of the plot or avoiding some spoilers It is a very short book but profoundly deep and thought provoking A Protestant priest decides to take home and adopt a blind girl who is around 14 years old whose aunt died and she hadn t other relatives who could take care of her Despite he already had 5 children he wants to help this girl driven by charitable love He stays a lot of time with her teaches her everything he can despite her blindness and Gertrude this the name of the girl is very intelligent and learns very fast Everyone in the story from the pastor s wife to Gertrude and also the reader see that this charitable love was slowly turning into real human love the only one that wasn t aware of this was the pastor because he thought he did everything out of charity The pastor continued to lie to himself because he didn t want to admit that his love was deeper as he thought There are also some thought provoking dialogs about the Gospels between the pastor and his son that was studying theology and that was in love too with Gertrude But his son wanted to marry her because he was aware of his feelings The pastor didn t agree with this wedding but not because he was aware of his own love and jalousy he thought that this blind girl should have been protected by everything that could hurt her also a real love story and a family life with its up and downs The pastor s son decides to listen to his father and goes away from home though he suffered a lot because he didn t receive his father s blessing to marry GertrudeFor all the time Gertrude lived with the pastor s family he never told her about the bad things there are in the world or about sins Also of the Gospels he taught her only what he wanted avoiding parts about sins To tell the truth he himself took from the Gospels only the parts he wanted avoiding the rest He depicted Gertrude a wonderful world made only by good things and that real love as described by Jesus would never hurt a person The pastor was still sure to love her with that kind of love Gertrude was happy about her life but she was aware that something was missing She wanted to know and understand everything by herself and not through the eyes and words of the pastor When a doctor said that her blindness could have been operated so she could see again she decided to do this operation while the pastor was worried because he knew that he couldn t protect her any if she was free to see the world as it is Well after the operation there are a couple of spoilers I won t tell There is a very interesting dialog between Gertrude and the pastor and suddenly the pastor became aware that the real blind person has always been him and not Gertrude But also that all his efforts to protect Gertrude brought only to hurt her even and that also other people of his family suffered because of his behavior At the end the pastor doesn t lose only Gertrude but also his son that converted to Catholicism becoming a monk and he starts to uestion also his faith Though these seem spoilers the most important and interesting parts of this book are the dialogs between the pastor his son Gertrude but also the parts where the pastor thinks about himself his behavior and the Gospels It is a wonderful short book I would recommend to anyone also those that aren t into religion In the introduction of my edition there s written that Gide wrote this short book before he himself converted to Catholicism

Before reading La symphonie pastorale all I knew about Andr Gide was that he had greatly influenced the writings of Sartre and Camus If it is to be taken as typical of Gide s work then this is no wonder The familiar themes of Sartrean existentialism and of Camus s absurdism stir just beneath the novella s surface in the Pastor s evident bad faith in the freedom he takes with Biblical texts and in his tragic failure by his own hand In fact there are few defining themes of 20th Century philosophy and literature that are not contained at least in embryonic form in this slender volume If the 19th Century saw the implosion of Cartesian self consciousness through the successive blows dealt to it by Hegel Darwin and Freud it must be admitted that it took until the 20th for its implications to reach a wider audience in film literature and popular discourse Thus the 20th Century and so far the 21st may be understood as the century of suspicion behind the apparent necessity of the social world there lies the mere contingency of history behind the spontaneity of the mental event the blind regularity of physical processes behind each overt thought behind each observable action a covert and unacknowledged significance The theme of the unacknowledged drive of the concealed intent of the covert forces lurking behind the overt event is of central importance to La symphonie pastorale The story is simple A pastor discovers a blind girl He takes her in He falls in love with her Tragic conseuences ensue This is no epic As with all great authors of the 20th Century Sartre and Camus come to mind here again but also Hemingway Joyce and Kafka Gide s focus here is not on narrative but on psychological exploration the drama of the story does not lie primarily in the events that unfold but in the mental and emotional lives of the charactersIn this particular case so much of the drama lies in the irony of the Pastor s situation Is it not La Rochefoucauld who used to say that the mind is often duped by the heart p 111 he asks reflecting on his son Jacues s uncompromising doctrinairism The irony here is convoluted not only is it the Pastor himself and not his son who is duped by his heart but this very reasoning this appeal to La Rochefoucauld is itself the product of his self deception A self deception that is painfully obvious not only to the reader but to everyone around the Pastor He accuses me of picking out of Christian doctrine whatever I please the Pastor says of his son p 104 And he is right of course Even Gertrude blind as she is sees the Pastor s love for her Perhaps there is a blindness crippling the mere lack of eyesight This blindness however runs deep Human beings I often say have an extraordinary talent for self deception We reason explain and rationalize we analyze and revise and clarify and postulate and pretend to have some degree of control while in fact control escapes us I ve been guilty of it myself If I had to guess I d say Gide has been as well He depicts the sinful innocence of self deception with as keen a psychological eye as Kierkegaard describing the aesthete s self indulgent despair Too keen an eye I would venture not to know it intimately And in this depiction I see myself all too clearlyPerhaps this is where the horror of La symphonie pastorale lies for me As Nietzsche was uick to seize upon as soon as we admit that our overt acts admit of covert explanations then any event may potentially be unmasked its sordid secrets laid bare to the psychologist s or the genealogist s gaze even our theorizing itself cannot be preserved from suspicion In such conditions being aware that one has deceived oneself is deceiving oneself will deceive oneself is not enough Can we detect this self deception Always And what if our apparent self awareness is itself just another fa ade and beneath it concealed lying in wait the machinery in place to seal our fate by our own hands
